They give you the benefits of a juicing or liquid diet detox without all the side effects and stress put on your body. But choosing the best detox tea in this ever- growing market.. To find a tea that lives up to its claims and that isn’t another regular green tea from the grocery store marketed for detox. That can require some trial and error. Testing various brands and comparing them to each other. As the teatox enthusiast that I am, I did just that. And then I decided to put this website up. To spread the word about detox tea and so that I may save others the hassle I went through to find a tea that actually works. If you’re new to the world of detoxing with tea, no worries! On this page I aim to teach you all you need to know about detox teas and teatoxes, including what they are and how they work, the amazing benefits they can bring, side- effects to watch out for, important factors when choosing your tea and the best detox teas available (my absolute favorites). So, without further ado, let’s get started! What Is Detox Tea? Your diet is much less of a concern when teatoxing. Eating what you would normally should be just fine. Just as the words imply, a tea detox have to do with using tea as a way to detoxify your body. A detox tea. What’s especially great about tea detoxing is that you can simply add the regimen to your regular diet and lifestyle.. This means you don’t have to put any additional stress of the body in the form of calorie restrictions or avoiding the foods you enjoy (this can still be a good thing though depending on what your goals are, but by no means a necessity). You can also detox CONTINUOUSLY without it affecting your lifestyle too much. You can keep toxins at an all time low instead of doing it in intervals with taxing liquid diets and juice fasts. And all you have to do is make drinking your herbal detox tea a daily habit. It can also be used more specifically as a colon cleansing tea, a liver detox tea, kidney cleanse tea, etc. Do Detox Teas Work? In a word, YES. They most definitely do. 28 Day Detox Diet Arbonne Detox Kit28 Day Detox Diet Arbonne Detox ReviewsElse I wouldn’t have bothered to make this website in the first place. There are many detox teas that don’t work very well though, so let me correct myself. Detox teas work given you choose an effective brand. Everyone is different however, and the only way to find out how well it works for you would be trying some for yourself! Personally I’ve had great success from teatoxing and achieved many of its touted benefits (see below for a list), including weight loss. ![]() ![]() What About A Tea Detox/Teatox Diet? A tea detox diet is what you’d call a liquid detox diet where you only drink tea. For most people this is not a good idea and may be both frustrating and dangerous. It puts your body in starvation mode since tea contains pretty much zero calories. Some people do a green tea detox since that’s what they have available at home, and try to only drink green tea, no calories. If that’s your tea detox plan you’re in for a rough time and will potentially cause your body harm. A teatox diet is much like a fast, and fasting for too long can put a lot of stress on your body. So please, avoid this, since the way I see it the whole purpose of a tea detox is to detox without having to starve yourself or make other major changes. That’s why we (I) love it so much! ![]() Don’t put yourself through this. More harm than good will come from it! This classic dish is rich and satisfying and I Welcome to Boxing for Life! How long does it take for the fertility diet to have its effect? There is a constant cycle of cells renewing themselves in the body. Detox Tea Benefits. Detox tea comes with SO many benefits, which is one of the reasons I (and many others) love it so much.
The things that are enjoyable to eat and drink are too often bad for your health, but tea happens to be an exception to the rule! Green, black or white tea are already great for you. The thing about detox teas though, is that they give you all the benefits of regular tea, AND the benefits of detoxification. How’s that for a super food (drink)? Here are some of the amazing benefits you can expect from a proper detox tea: Toxin Removal – perhaps the most obvious advantage over regular forms of tea, and a big one. With the amount of toxins we are exposed to daily in this century, from the air we breathe to the processed foods we ingest, anyone could benefit from detoxing. Weight Loss – yep, if you didn’t know it already, it can definitely help you lose weight. To achieve this, it works in many different ways at the same time, many of which are listed below. Appetite Suppressant – you’re less likely to indulge in snacks and what not when drinking detox tea, as it has the benefit of suppressing appetite, making you less hungry. This is, as you probably guessed already, great for losing weight! Increased Metabolism – another benefit that’s directly related to burning calories. A faster metabolism means you’ll be burning more calories even when resting. Who doesn’t want that? A fast metabolism also greatly improves the body’s natural detox mechanisms. Digestion Aid – although not unique to detox teas per say, improved digestion is still a much welcome benefit. Your body gets better at absorbing. The emptying of your colon is also sped up, which is a great way to make sure toxins leave your body before they get a chance to get reabsorbed into your blood stream. Immune System Boost – with the amounts of antioxidants you give your body when drinking tea regularly, you can be sure your immune system gets an inevitable boost. Improved Liver, Kidney and Colon Function – since these organs are responsible for much of your body’s toxic waste elimination, an effective detox tea will help your liver by reducing the total toxin load in your body. Allergy Relief – symptoms of allergies and hay fever can be greatly reduced through detoxing if you’re loaded with toxins. More Energy – a direct result of effective detox. When your body works more optimally, you will have more energy available at your disposal. Improved Skin – being the biggest organ you have, it only makes sense that a good detox will improve the health of your skin. Improved Mood & Sense Of Well- being – toxins take a toll on all your bodily processes. When your body isn’t working properly, it often affects your mood, emotions and sense of well- being negatively. When that’s the case a detox is often the best medicine! Clearer Thinking – too much toxins can impair your thinking and cause brain fog. In the end, your brain is just a susceptible as the rest of your body to excess toxin exposure. Anti- aging – many people both feel and look younger after getting a detox. Keep in mind these are just a few of the touted benefits of detox tea. You may not experience every single one of these teatox benefits yourself, but probably most of them if you use a reliable detox tea such the one I always use. Although side effects are generally non- existent when using detox teas, as with anything, they do exist. They are often very mild but can include an upset stomach and diarrhea, headaches, joint pain, skin rashes. As with any detox, you should not over- do it. If curious, on web. MD you can check out the general side- effects of detoxification here and those of green tea here. But again, they are not that relevant because detox tea is known to be very safe as long as you follow the instructions. Best Detox Tea (for general teatoxing AND weight loss)Here comes my favorite part, and perhaps the bit that will save you a lot of time and avoid getting scammed into purchasing an ineffective detox tea for your teatox. So many that fall for false marketing from various questionable companies then write detox tea off as not working. All because the product they chose was of low quality. But detox teas are no different from other types of foods and beverages in that you aren’t likely to find the best detox tea right away. Myself, I was lucky to start off with a tea that at least had some effect. This motivated me to try other brands to see if that was it or if there was even more to gain. Had I not experienced any benefits from my first detox tea, my journey might have ended right there as well. Anyways. After my original success I went through maybe four or five different brands where only one of them gave me any tangible effects comparable to my first tea. Some of them still tasted alright so as ordinary teas they were alright I guess. Then I got more sophisticated and researched teatox online on websites and forums to find what teas had worked for others. What brands the teatox communities considered the best teatox products. And that’s how I eventually found the Kou. Tea detox tea. Others seemed to have impressive results with it so of course I had to give it a shot too. And I can say it has worked by far the best for me personally out of all the detox teas I’ve gone through. And as a nice bonus I really like the taste too (for me, most important are the benefits and effects I experience, but taste matters a little too, since afterall you’ll be drinking the stuf every day). I still try other teas every now and then if I hear good things about a certain brand, but always seem to return to Kou. Tea. At the moment I no longer need to lose any weight so I simply use it for maintenance to keep my metabolism active and toxins low. So even though I do enjoy exercising, I don’t really have to do it to keep my weight where I want it as long as I drink my Kou. Tea. And in the end that’s, as mentioned before, what makes tea detoxing so convenient. That you can continuously detox and keep toxins at an all time low and stay at a healthy weight, without it affecting your lifestyle much at all. As a daily add- on to your regular life and diet, instead of a replacement or change as most other detox methods call for. Detox Tea/Teatox Reviews. As you know by now, my clear favorite among detox teas is the Kou. Tea detox tea. But I also thought I’d briefly mention some of the other big brands in the industry that I’ve tested, in case you’re curious of how it compares or simply can’t order from Kou. Tea for whatever reason (shipping location?). Numerous studies have shown that specific changes to the diet can improve fertility, prevent recurrent miscarriage and support a healthy pregnancy. Nutrition plays a big roll when it comes to having a healthy body and reproductive system. The building blocks for hormones are found in the foods we eat. Antioxidants, which help to protect the egg and sperm from free radicals, are found in the foods that we eat. Just as nutrients in food can be helpful for fertility, there are some foods and chemicals added to foods that can be harmful for your health and fertility. In working with our natural fertility clients the first topic of discussion, regardless of the reason they are consulting with us, is “what is your diet like?”. Many of their responses are. More often than not, it is not a diet that is healthy for fertility. Regardless of what your definition of healthy is, today I am going to share with you what the definition of healthy is for fertility, and what that looks like in real life. A diet for fertility will look different even compared to a normal healthy whole food diet. This may very well be different compared to how you are eating now and include foods that are foreign, new to you or even exotic sounding. We have tools to help you get started and recipes to make this easy and fun! What is a Fertility Diet? So what exactly is a fertility diet? A Natural Fertility Diet is a way of eating that is supporting your body in its reproductive efforts. It includes foods which are dense in specific nutrients needed for hormonal function, production and balance, fetal development, egg health, sperm health, blood health, and much more. It is a diet that is designed to help your body to balance fertility issues that may exist, build up nutrient stores and provide all of the building blocks for a healthy child. It is also a diet that is focused on giving you and your future child the best start in life. Why Eat A Natural Fertility Diet? Did you know that there are specific nutrients that are needed by the young fetus before you can even detect pregnancy, and a deficiency in these nutrients could cause serious birth defects? Did you know that the foods you eat today impact the health of your eggs and sperm 9. Did you know that hormones build themselves from the ingredients you provide through your diet? Did you know that the number one treatment for balancing PCOS and getting pregnant despite PCOS is diet? Did you know that what you don’t eat is just as important as what you do eat? Did you know that the number one cause of infertility is anovulation (lack of ovulation) and that it can often be remedied by changes in the diet? We all eat, so why not eat in a way that supports your fertility? The Science Behind the Natural Fertility Diet. The Natural Fertility Diet suggestions are an accumulation of scientific research, nutritional data, dietary practices of the most fertile tribes and peoples in history, as well as dietary practices which are known to reduce complications during pregnancy. Harvard Research. Harvard performed a recent study that showed an 8. Women who followed a combination of five or more lifestyle factors, including changing specific aspects of their diets, experienced more than 8. Obstetrics & Gynecology. The women with the highest fertility diet scores ate less trans fats and sugar from carbohydrates, consumed more protein from vegetables than from animals, ate more fiber and iron, took more multivitamins, had a lower body mass index (BMI), exercised for longer periods of time each day, and, surprisingly, consumed more high- fat dairy products and less low- fat dairy products. The relationship between a higher “fertility diet” score and lesser risk for infertility was similar for different subgroups of women regardless of age and whether or not they had been pregnant in the past. Dr. Brewer. The Natural Fertility Diet has also incorporated the research of Dr. Weston Price’s recommendations are based on traditional diets that were followed in times when humans were most fertile, before industrial foods. Dr. Brewer’s Diet has been shown to reduce the risks of pregnancy complications, specifically preeclampsia. It promotes a diet that has an abundance of protein, minerals, calcium and healthy oils. Natural Nutritional Practices for Healing. Nature has created foods to help nourish and feed the body. When the body is optimally nourished and unhealthy foods are avoided, the body is then able to repair and rebuild itself. This is very helpful for fertility, especially if there is an underlying imbalance or fertility issue. The cells in the body are constantly dying off and new cells are being created to replace the old cells. This is occurring in every organ, muscle, tissue, etc. The building blocks of these new cells are provided from the foods that you are consuming. The Natural Fertility Diet is also designed to help support a healthy body which in turn can heal itself and create healthier cells. The Benefits of Eating a Natural Fertility Diet. Provides antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which help to protect egg and sperm health from the damage caused by free- radicals. Helps the body maintain hormonal balance by providing the fats needed for hormone production and function. Provides the body with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients needed for optimal health. May decrease the chances of a miscarriage due to insulin resistance and damage from free- radicals to the ova (eggs), sperm and DNA. Helps to build important nutrient stores for pregnancy. Supports a healthy reproductive system. Promotes energy and vitality. The Natural Fertility Diet Nutrition Guidelines. Eat a lot of organic vegetables and fruits. Conventional produce contains harmful herbicides and pesticides which have been shown to negatively effect both male and female fertility. Studies have also shown organic vegetables and fruits to have more nutritional value. Eat organic, grass- fed, whole fat, raw dairy. Organic, grass- fed, whole fat, raw dairy is the best choice of dairy sources. Take note that dairy foods such as milk and cheese may be congesting to the body. In cases of congesting fertility issues such as PCOS and Endometriosis, dairy foods may aggravate the imbalance. Observe how your body does with it. Dairy that is not organic should be avoided as it contains added hormones and antibiotics which can contribute to increased estrogen levels in the body. There are many healthy alternatives to dairy such as fresh almond or hemp milk. Try to eat mostly cold water fish. Fish supplies important essential fatty acids (omega 3) to our diet. These fatty acids aid in the production of hormones, reduce inflammation, and help regulate the menstrual cycle. Fish is also a great source of protein and vitamin A. Avoid large deep water fish such as ahi tuna, swordfish, and Chilean sea bass due to their potential concentrations of mercury, and focus on cold water fish such as wild Alaskan salmon, cod, and Alaskan halibut. Also when choosing salmon, avoid north Atlantic farmed salmon and choose wild salmon instead. Farmed salmon contains antibiotics and toxic food dyes. Choose meat that is Grass Fed and Organic. Conventionally raised cattle contain high levels of added hormones and antibiotics which can contribute to estrogen dominate conditions. Grass Fed meats, on the other hand, are a great source of essential fatty acids, are low in saturated fat, and are a great source of protein. If you are experiencing endometriosis you may want to reduce the amount of red meat that you eat as a study has shown a connection between high red meat consumption and endometriosis. Choose only free range/Organic chicken. Conventionally raised chickens are kept in unclean, cramped housing conditions and are fed non- organic and often, genetically modified feed. When shopping for chicken, look for the words “cage free”, “free range”, or “organic” on the label. Ideally purchasing your chicken from a local farm with free- range practices is best. Eat only grains in their whole, natural form Whole grains are filled with fiber, important vitamins, and immune supporting properties. Fiber is important for helping the body to get rid of excess hormones and helps to keep the blood sugar balanced. Avoid processed and refined white foods and grains such as white bread, semolina pastas, and white rice. Instead choose whole wheat or sprouted bread, rice or whole wheat pasta, quinoa, and brown rice. Eat high fiber foods with each meal Fiber helps to regulate blood sugar levels which helps to reduce fertility issues such as PCOS, immunological issues, and promotes healthy hormonal balance. Some examples of high fiber foods are fruits, vegetables, dark leafy greens, and beans. No soy of any form unless fermented such as miso and tempeh. Soy foods have been shown to contain estrogen mimicking properties. It is best to avoid processed soy foods such as soy milk, soy burgers, soy protein powder, soy chips, soy meats, and soy cheeses to avoid a negative impact on your hormonal balance. Also avoid any processed/refined and artificial sugars. Some great alternatives are stevia, honey, and maple syrup. Drink lots of clean water Be sure to drink at least half your body weight in ounces of clean, purified or filtered water daily. It is best to avoid bottled water as some of the plastics in the bottle can contribute to hormonal imbalance due to their estrogen mimicking chemicals. The best waters to choose from are reverse osmosis and distilled. Avoid tap water, as many recent studies have shown tap water to be laced with harmful pesticides from agricultural runoff. Important Nutrients for Fertility. While all nutrients are important for health, there are some that have been specifically shown to have a direct impact on fertility. Below is a list of these nutrients and the foods you can find them in. Yale University School of Medicine conducted a study of 6. Vitamin D levels. Leangains Guide Diet Review with a Sample Meal Plan and My Results after 2 Months of Intermittent Fasting part 1. Hey guys, it’s been a while since I wrote here, hope you are all doing fine. First of let me explain why was Lean gains so appealing to me that I had to try it. I guess the main reason was that at some point after not missing a meal for 2 years (6 meals + protein shake per day for 2 years) I just lost it and couldn’t keep up. I was basically doing what everybody in the fitness and bodybuilding industry said it was the right way to do things. Here is some of the stuff that was part of my daily life: carrying around food in plastic containers, always looking at the watch if it’s time to eat, eating even when I wasn’t hungry because it was TIME, had to eat before bed and every morning as soon as you wake up eat as fast as I can so I have time to get ready for work. I realized I’m spending most of my free time eating and preparing food. Maybe a part of me didn’t want to admit that all of the things I believed were true and all the things that I struggled to maintain in my daily routine didn’t really matter. So after a month of deciding if I’m going to let go of my old habits I decided to finally free myself and try leangains. This article is directly a result of my experience from last 2 months of doing the leangains style of eating. Lean gains vs. Carbo cycling. As you probably know if you read my blog carbohydrate cycling was my diet of choice for cutting and clean bulking, generally it’s very difficult to follow, results are amazing, energy levels are sky high and I’ve been doing it for 2 years. Also I’m very happy to hear regular feedback from people that followed my carb cycling diet for cutting and got great results. If you are not familiar with carb cycling you can check out the full article here. It’s a very hard diet to keep up with and I would only advise it for very advanced people with at least 2 years of experience with following strict meal plans. When comparing lean gains with carb cycling it’s like another planet, so for most of you guys you’d want to keep reading this and you check out carb cycling later. Basically if you are after the results they are the same. ![]() Difference is that leangains is a more sustainable system when aiming for long term. Instead of cycling 3 different days low, moderate and high carb you cycle 2 days your workout days and your off days. All though some of carb cycling lovers might argue here that for some workout days you don’t need the same amount of calories (arms vs. On typical work days I wake up at 7 AM and go to sleep at 2. You can sometimes push it to 1. Sometimes I also end up eating at 2. OK as long as you follow the routine. You might be wondering how I don’t get hungry in the morning and I also thought that would be a problem but really it’s not, it’s just what you are used to. I wake up have my green tea and drink water till 1. I’ve felt hungrier when I had my breakfast as soon as I woke up. Outside of this eating window you shouldn’t consume any calories. ![]() ![]() Things that are allowed: green tea (without sugar), water, coffee (without sugar), calorie free sweeteners and sugar free gum. Diet soda (0 calories) is acceptable too but you should avoid that in general for numerous health issues caused by artificial sweeteners and additives. How many meals should you eat? Personally I prefer to have 3 meals, my workout is usually around 1. I like to have my second meal around 1. I feel like my workout is a lot better on full stomach (2h after a meal). ![]() Basically you can have as many meals as you want as long as you eat them inside the 8h window and that you fit your daily calorie intake goal. Some eat 2 some do 4 meals, I prefer 3 and I have good results and to be honest it seems the most logical to eat breakfast, before and after workout. What about calorie intake? Calories are all that matters, that’s the single most important thing you should know about all diets. Knowing how many calories you eat and your calorie goal is essential to reaching or maintaining your physique. There is no way around this, if you don’t count calories start doing it. The sooner you start the better. Easiest way to find out your calorie numbers is by using a calculator to get a rough estimation of the intake and then after you set a calorie goal and eat food to match it you measure yourself every Monday morning after toilet on empty stomach on a weight scale (has to be the same scale) and see if the weight is going up or down or staying the same. I suggest you try to find out your maintenance level first and then adjust it to fit your goal, so take 3 weeks to find out your maintenance and then you have a great base to start gaining muscle or cutting fat. As far as leangains rules, you want to consume at 5. So my last meal is the biggest on workout days. On rest days my biggest meal is breakfast where I also aim to consume 5. Here is a great calorie calculator designed specifically for intermittent fasting and it works great for lean gains. Link. Macro and micro nutrients. For every meal plan after you set your calories you need to split those calories into macro nutrients. I keep my protein high around 2. Carbs and fat vary depending if it’s workout or rest day, on workout days I like to have more carbs and on rest days I reduce the carbs and up the fat a bit. You can check out a sample meal plan on the bottom on this article where I’m going to show you exactly how much calories I intake and from which food. Difference with lean gains and some other diet is that you want to consume most of your carb calories after exercise and keep the protein high in all meals so for example my last meal + protein shake have 1. Micro nutrients also important but they should be passively handled if you eat a good amount of vegetables and carbs from healthy sources like Oats. If you are still worried about that you can always throw in a multivitamin and mineral supplement to cover everything. Supplements and Leangains. As far as supplements I’m not a big fan of throwing away loads of money on them. In my opinion supplements are a nice addition if you have extra cash but most of you don’t need them and won’t feel any difference. If you are cutting with a very large calorie deficit vitamin and minerals supplements are great but I don’t recommend you do that in the first places so let’s get back to lean gains. Supplements I use are whey protein, minerals (calcium, zinc and magnesium) and fish oil.– Whey protein isolate is there for practical reasons, it makes my life a lot easier as I don’t have time to eat 2. If I had the spare time to prepare solid meals and chew I wouldn’t drink whey.– The 3 minerals (calcium, zinc and magnesium) are something worth investing in my opinion, with very heavy training and no red meat I rely on these to make sure I’m not missing out on anything.– Omega 3 Fish oil is essential for good health. This is a supplement that most people can benefit from, if you don’t eat omega 3 rich fish every day get fish oil in pill form. Your goal should be to intake a minimum of 2 grams of EPA + DHA, this amount will be enough to get all the benefits. Benefits of Leangains and my experience with Intermittent Fasting. The biggest benefits I can think of is definitely more free time, I can’t imagine going back to 6- 7 meals. I can’t put it to words how liberating it feels to switch from 7 to 3 meals. With 3 meals I’m more productive and it’s much more practical if you have other tasks in life except eating. You guys probably wonder by now what’s the difference between leangains and the typical average American diet with 2- 3 meals. The biggest problem is that the average Joe has no idea how many calories he needs or how many calories he consumes. Also you probably noticed people always have snacks (they don’t have control over that) and these snacks are constantly spiking insulin which prevents all the benefits of Intermittent fasting like prolonged fat burning. Also the typical American junk food diet has very bad food choices which don’t even cover the basic protein intake, has too much sodium, lacks vegetables and fiber. Thing I noticed about leangains is that my focus improved and energy levels are much more stable than while I was having 6 meals (which goes against what’s said in most fitness magazines and forums). Problem with many meals is that after each meal you get an insulin spike which shortly after results in a sugar drop that causes bad mood. I’ve noticed that 3 large meals give a more consistent energy flow because of the volume of food, higher fat and larger quantity fiber ingested at once. Effects on gaining muscle and losing fat. After 2 months of following lean gains I haven’t noticed any difference in my physique after switching to 3 meals, my calories and foods are same as before and it’s only logical to assume that meal frequency doesn’t play any role in body composition. It’s all calories in and out. Right now my main focus is building some lean muscle mass so I’m doing 1. I keep maintenance calories. The meal frequency and style is sustainable long term and for big family events or some celebrations where I have to “cheat“ the only thing I have to do is create a calorie buffer. For example I’m skipping meal 2 and having all those calories in meal 3. This works perfect and it’s much easier to manage a social life as your meals are mostly at the same time as everyone else. It’s funny how when I first started this everyone was shocked when I didn’t turn down pizza or cake like I used to. I was a big believer in clean diets with no cheat meals and yes it works, the results are great but now I’m testing if food choice does matter at all. I’m testing for example if I can have chocolate and reduce some rice and almonds while maintaining the calorie balance with the same end result. Are you in ketosis but still not losing weight? Stop Eating Gluten and Grains If You Have Acne. By Dr. Mercola. Nearly 8. While not physically dangerous, acne can take a considerable psychological toll. Some sufferers become so self- conscious and embarrassed that their professional and personal lives suffer, leading to increasing feelings of alienation, depression, and social withdrawal. Many mistakenly believe acne is mostly an aesthetic problem, but it is actually a sign of deeper imbalance in your system, often in your gut. Most physicians miss this connection entirely, instead prescribing acne drugs and other topical treatments. Americans spend more than $2. Desperate to Clear Your Skin? Stop Eating Gluten and Grains. Full- blown celiac disease, which is an extreme form of gluten sensitivity causing both the adaptive and innate immune system to attack your small intestine, affects an estimated 1. Western cultures. ![]() ![]() But non- celiac gluten sensitivity may actually affect as many as 3. Dr. Alessio Fasano at Massachusetts General Hospital, virtually all of us are affected to some degree. This is because we all create a substance called zonulin in the intestine in response to gluten. Glutinous proteins, found in wheat, barley, and rye, known as prolamines can make your gut more permeable, which allows partially digested proteins to get into your bloodstream that would otherwise have been excluded, any of which can sensitize your immune system and promote inflammation, which can contribute to worsening acne.
Once gluten sensitizes your gut, it then becomes more permeable and all manner of gut bacterial components and previously excluded dietary proteins—including casein and other dairy proteins—have direct access to your bloodstream, thereby further challenging your immune system. However, I don't recommend you stop there. Acne is much less of a problem in non- Westernized societies, where refined carbohydrates and sugar are consumed in much lower amounts. Diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates are one of the primary causes of acne. This can lead to an excess of male hormones, like testosterone, which cause your pores to secrete sebum, a greasy substance that attracts acne- promoting bacteria. Additionally, IGF- 1 causes skin cells known as keratinocytes to multiply, a process that is also associated with acne. Additionally, these very same foods - - refined carbs, such as fructose, sugar, and grains - - will also increase inflammation in your body, which may trigger acne, and at the same time they will also wreak havoc on the makeup of your intestinal bacteria, as mentioned above. To adjust for this rapid rise, your pancreas secretes the hormone insulin into your bloodstream. High blood sugar levels cause repeated surges in insulin and this causes your cells to become . Plus the story of Carrie Vitt's recovery. ![]() Prolonged excessive insulin secretion can also eventually burn out your pancreatic beta cells which produce it, leading to . This is why, if you struggle with acne, you want to avoid all foods that contribute to insulin resistance (namely sugar and grains), not just the gluten- containing grains. The best way to know if you are insulin/leptin resistant is to measure your fasting insulin level. ![]() ![]() ![]() If it is below 3, you are not likely resistant. However, if you are overweight, have high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, or abnormal cholesterol levels, it is likely that you have some element of insulin/leptin resistance and you would likely benefit from restricting your intake of sugars and grains until the conditions resolve. Fruit contains a fair amount of fructose, so it should be consumed in limited quantities if you are predisposed to acne. Or, at least focus on the low- sugar, high- nutrient- dense fruits like berries. And fruit juices should be strictly avoided since the sugar is very concentrated in them, without the buffering effect of fiber, pectin, and other food cofactors present in whole, raw, organic fruit. Fresh vegetable juices are great, though, especially green juices, as are most vegetables, which are slow to break down into simple sugars, with minimal insulin impact. Why Optimizing Your Gut Health May Help with Acne. When you clean up your diet as described above, your gut health will naturally improve. You can further support it by consuming fermented foods regularly, to encourage the growth of beneficial microorganisms, which will benefit your skin health in multiple ways. Researchers are looking into how these interactions can help with skin conditions like dryness, improve collagen, or stabilize the microflora on your skin to help with irritations. As noted by researchers in Gut Pathogens: 7. Research by dermatologists John Stokes and Donald Pillsbury conducted more than 7. In 2. 01. 1, researchers validated this connection, noting: 8. Although the frequency of SIBO in acne vulgaris has not yet been investigated, a recent report indicates that SIBO is 1. Correction of SIBO leads to marked clinical improvement in patients with rosacea. Your complexion is a reflection of your overall health, which is why topical (or worse, systemic) acne drugs will not heal the problem (and may result in serious side effects). Treating acne takes a whole- body approach that will nourish and heal your skin from the inside out, so don't forget to incorporate these essential factors into your acne- busting plan: Avoid starchy carbs, sugars/fructose, and grains: This is probably the single most important step you can take to improve your skin health. If you eliminate all sugars, fructose, and grains for a few weeks there is a major likelihood you will notice rapid improvement in your complexion. Replace these foods with healthy fats, like avocados, olives, olive oil, coconut oil, and butter. Be sure to check out my nutrition plan for a simple guide on how to eat right for healthy skin and overall health. Water: Drink plenty of fresh, pure water every day. Hydrating your body facilitates cell growth and regeneration, elimination of wastes, and sloughing away dead skin cells. Hydration will also improve your skin tone. Every day, drink enough water so that your urine is a pale yellow color. If your urine is bright yellow, you probably need to drink more water (unless you take B vitamins, which themselves turn urine bright yellow). Exercise: Getting plenty of high- intensity exercise helps your body flush out toxins, including those in your skin's pores. Plus, exercise is vitally important to all other aspects of your heath. If you happen to have access to an infrared sauna, this can be helpful too, because the more you sweat, the more you flush unwanted debris and contaminants out of your pores. Sleep: Did you know that a good night's sleep can decrease your stress and lead to clearer skin? Your body's main time for healing and rebuilding is at night while you sleep, and this applies to your skin. This is especially important if you have been on antibiotics, because these drugs indiscriminately kill off the beneficial bacteria in your gut, without which you cannot have a strong immune system. Vitamin D: This important nutrient is crucial for maintaining a healthy immune response, and most people are deficient in it. Without adequate vitamin D, your body cannot fight infection, in your skin or elsewhere. Exposing large areas of your skin to appropriate amounts of sunshine is the best way to optimize your vitamin D levels, or alternatively use a safe tanning bed. Animal- based omega- 3 fats: Omega- 3 fats help to normalize skin lipids and prevent dehydration in the cells. This keeps skin cells strong and full of moisture, which can help to decrease the appearance of fine lines. Fatty acid deficiency can manifest in a variety of ways, but skin problems such as eczema, thick patches of skin, and cracked heels are common. Plus, omega- 3 fats may have an anti- inflammatory effect that can help to calm irritated skin, giving you a clear, smooth complexion. Address your stress: My favorite tool is the Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. EFT involves tapping your body's energy meridians with the tips of your fingers to clear emotional blocks, thus restoring balance to your mind and body. EFT is a powerful de- stressing technique that is easy for adults and children to learn. You can also add in other proven stress- busters, such as yoga and meditation. All- natural acne fighter: Rubbing just a drop of oregano oil on a breakout can speed up the healing and prevent unsightly scarring without resorting to harsh commercial acne medication (remember to wash your hands thoroughly afterward).
